JD Fields: Awarded Largest Slug Catcher in Texas

West Texas

2019

A confidential engineering firm in Houston Texas crafted a proprietary design for what’s called “harp-style slug catchers” to design, engineer, fabricate and install the largest 48” slug catcher in the state of Texas.

J.D Fields & Company, a worldwide steel pipe distributor headquartered in Houston Texas was awarded over 1 mile of custom 48-inch diameter heavy wall steel pipe for the largest slug catcher in the state of Texas and possibly the USA. The unique design has a storage capacity of over 12,000 bbls/day of liquids (called a slug) that are pushed out of natural gas pipelines when they’re pigged, or cleaned. JD Fields contracted with JSW Steel located in Baytown, Texas, a domestic, leading manufacturer to produce 48” DSAW pipe.

Each 40’ joint of pipe, custom manufactured under special chemistries, high strength steel to operate under extreme pressures manufactured under the most difficult regulated specifications. The 48-inch steel pipe made in 40-foot sections weighs over 11 tons each or 563 pounds per foot. The Texas Slug is designed to operate over 75 atmospheres of pressure, critical to maintaining and operating a major pipeline.
